Why Care Matters
Outdoor clothing is exposed to mud, sweat, oils and changing weather. Over time, dirt and everyday use can reduce breathability, moisture management and water repellency—even if the garment itself is still in excellent condition.
With the right care routine, your equipment will continue to perform season after season.
Before restoring water repellency, always clean your garments. Dirt, body oils and detergent residue can prevent technical fabrics from performing as intended. In many cases, simply washing a garment correctly is enough to restore much of its original performance.
Only when water stops beading on the surface is it time to renew the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment.
Wool is naturally temperature regulating, breathable and odour resistant, meaning it doesn’t need washing after every use. Frequent washing or harsh detergents can damage the fibres and reduce softness over time.
When it’s time to clean your garment, use a gentle wool detergent to protect the fibres and maintain softness.

Over time, rain, dirt and regular wear gradually reduce the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish on the outer fabric of your waterproof clothing. When this happens, water no longer beads on the surface and instead begins to soak into the face fabric—a process often called “wetting out.”
Although the waterproof membrane underneath still keeps rain out, a saturated outer fabric reduces breathability, making your garment feel colder, heavier and less comfortable during activity.
Regular cleaning helps maintain performance, but when water stops beading it’s time to restore the DWR treatment.

Many hiking pants made from polyester/cotton blends can be rewaxed to restore water resistance and improve durability over time. Unlike factory-applied DWR treatments, wax penetrates the fabric to create a protective barrier that helps repel light rain, moisture and dirt.
Wax is especially useful on compatible hiking pants, allowing you to apply extra protection to high-wear areas such as the knees, seat and lower legs.

Generally, avoid fabric softener on technical outdoor clothing unless the garment’s care instructions specifically say otherwise. It can affect the performance of some technical fabrics.
