>> DEVELOPING OUR GEAR
A PRODUCTS JOURNEY
// Lets take a look into how we develop our garments and gear. From concept to finished product. We take you though our process for designing new upcoming gear and how we produced our existing collection //
WHAT'S IN THE PIPELINE?
At Beyond Nordic, we always have a range of products moving through different stages of development. We’re excited to give you a glimpse of what we’re currently creating and what will soon be launching in our e-store.
Using the drop-down menu below, you can explore projects that are already in production as well as concepts that are still on the drawing board. Further down this page, you’ll also find a step-by-step overview of our product development process, how our ideas evolve into finished products ready to be available in our e-store.

HOW WE MAKE OUR GEAR
Most of us experience clothing or equipment at the final moment — hanging neatly on a rack, placed in a drawer, or most importantly pulled on during one of our adventures. But long before a garment or piece of gear ever reaches your hands, it has already lived a long, complex life.
It is a lengthy but extremely rewarding process taking an idea and turning it into something tangible.
Clothing and other products are not just designed; they are developed, tested, adjusted, questioned, and refined over a period of time. In general this process can take anywhere from 12 to 36 months or in some cases even longer. Here at Beyond Nordic a products journey from concept to being sold is generally around 12-18 months. It is a process where creativity meets engineering, and vision meets reality.
This is our products journey from concept to completion.
>> THE CONCEPT
WHY SHOULD A PRODUCT EXIST?
Every piece of clothing or gear begins with a question. What problem does it solve? What purpose does it serve? Who is it for?
The concept stage is about intention. Our team look at how people move, explore the outdoors, live, and work. They consider environment, climate, use case, and lifestyle — from urban commuting to outdoor performance, from durability to comfort. Inspiration might come from nature, architecture, historical garments, or simply an unmet need noticed while out on our adventures.
At this stage, nothing is fixed we purely have an idea. Ideas are sketched, discussed, rejected, and rebuilt. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s clarity. A clear reason for why a product should exist at all.
>> THE DESIGN
TURNING IDEAS INTO A PRODUCT
Once the concept has been clarified, design gives it shape and detail.
We take our concepts and abstract ideas and translate them into silhouettes, lines, and details. This includes deciding how a garment should fit, where seams should sit, how pockets function, and how the fabric should drape on the body. Aesthetic choices and technical requirements are developed side by side — good design isn’t just about how something looks, but how well it performs the intended function.
Materials are chosen carefully. Fabric weight, stretch, durability, breathability, and finish all matter. Even small decisions — a zipper, a button, a seam reinforcement — can dramatically affect how a garment feels, performs and lasts.
The design process is creative, but also deeply practical.
>> PATTERN MAKING
ENGINEERING THE PERFECT FIT
From the design stage we create patterns, these are our clothings blueprints. They translate a flat design into a three-dimensional form that fits the human body.
Our pattern maker builds the first technical version of a garment, adjusting proportions, balance, and construction. From here, sizing begins. A single design must work across multiple body types and sizes, which requires careful grading — scaling the pattern up and down while maintaining fit, comfort, and function. This stage is where theory meets reality. A beautiful design that doesn’t fit well simply doesn’t work.
>> CHECKING THE SIZING
HOW DOES IT FEEL AND FIT?
We hold fitting sessions to test a garments functionality across different body types. We use the feedback from these sessions to make adjustments. At this stage re-patterning is essential, and often this process is repeated many times to ensure the perfect fit.
>> PROTOTYPING & TESTING
LETS MAKE IT REAL
With patterns in place, prototypes are created by our production team. These early versions — sometimes rough, sometimes nearly final — are worn, stretched, washed, and stressed.
Testing is where honesty lives. Our test garments are evaluated for comfort, durability, movement, and performance. Seams are pulled, fabrics are worn down, and weak points are exposed. What looked good on paper may fail in motion — and that’s exactly the point of testing.
Feedback loops are critical here. Our designers, developers, and testers collaborate to refine the garment, adjusting materials, construction, and details until it performs as intended.
Once refinements have been confirmed final prototypes are made in all sizes. This final version is known as the PPS (pre production sample) and sets the bar for the production team.
>> PRODUCTION
PRECISION AT SCALE
Once a garment or piece of gear passes testing, it moves into production — a phase where craftsmanship meets consistency.
Our factories prepare materials, cut fabric, assemble components, and ensure quality standards are met across every unit. Unlike prototypes, production requires repeatability. Every stitch, measurement, and finish must be reliable, scalable, and precise.
This stage depends heavily on experience, communication, and quality control. Small errors can multiply quickly at scale, so attention to detail is everything.
We ourselves make regular visits at short notice to our factories and ensure with our own eyes that the production chain meets the Beyond Nordic standard. This also includes checking working conditions for employees. All our factories and suppliers hold the BSCI - code of conduct certificate by Amfori. A certification that ensures ethical and moral working conditions, while other working codes of conduct.
>> QUALITY CONTROL
THE LAST CHECK
Before a garment is shipped to our warehouse, it undergoes final inspection. This is carried out by a certified third party inspection company. Measurements are checked, finishes reviewed, and functionality tested one last time.
Once the production has been received at our warehouse we carry out a final spot inspection across the entire delivery. This is the final safeguard — ensuring that what arrives to the customer reflects the original vision and meets the intended standard.
Only then is the garment considered complete.
MORE THAN FABRIC & THREAD
Clothing is often treated as something disposable, but the process behind it is anything but simple. Each garment represents hundreds of decisions — creative, technical, and ethical. It carries the work of a team, designers, pattern makers, developers, testers, and makers across the entire supply chain.
Understanding how our outdoor clothing is made doesn’t just deepen appreciation — it changes how we wear, care for, and value what we own.
The best garments aren’t just worn for a season, they’re built to last.
