For most day hikes, a 20L backpack such as the BN503 is suitable for carrying essentials such as water, food, extra layers and personal gear. A larger pack can be useful when you need to carry additional clothing, equipment or overnight gear.
A 20L backpack can be enough for a typical day hike when you’re carrying only the essentials. The BN503 provides 20L of storage with multiple compartments, hydration compatibility and external attachment points.
The amount of equipment you need determines the capacity. A 40L backpack can work for lightweight overnight or weekend trips, while a 60L backpack provides more room for clothing, food, sleeping equipment and other gear on longer journeys.
Place heavier items close to your back and around the centre of the pack. Keep frequently used items such as snacks, rain gear and navigation equipment somewhere easily accessible. Use the bottom of the pack for equipment you won’t need until you stop.
Heavy items should generally sit close to your back and around the centre of the pack. This helps keep the load balanced and reduces unnecessary movement while hiking.
Keep items you may need during the day within easy reach. This can include snacks, a rain jacket, first aid supplies, sunscreen, a map and sunglasses.
Start by adjusting the back length to your torso, then position the hip belt, adjust the shoulder straps and finish with the chest strap. The BN506 and BN507 feature the TrekFit adjustable carry system with multiple adjustment points for a personalized fit.
Bulky equipment that doesn’t need to go inside the main compartment can be secured externally. Trekking poles, sleeping mats, tents and additional clothing can be attached using the backpack’s external attachment points, compression systems or an expansion kit.
Hiking backpacks are generally designed to provide protection against light moisture rather than being completely waterproof. The BN503, BN506 and BN507 all use DWR-treated outer fabrics. The BN506 and BN507 also include integrated rain covers for additional protection in wet conditions.
You don’t necessarily need one, but a hydration system can make drinking easier while you’re moving. The BN404 3L Hydration Pack provides hands-free hydration and is designed for compatible backpacks.
The essentials depend on your adventure. A hydration system can improve access to water, a first aid kit helps you prepare for minor injuries, and an expansion kit provides additional external carrying capacity. A rain cover adds another layer of protection in wet conditions.
Start with the equipment you’ll need for the night and organize it around how frequently you’ll access it. Keep sleeping and camp equipment lower in the pack, heavier items close to your back, and clothing, food and weather layers where they can be reached during the day.
